Best Vidai Songs after an Indian Wedding (2023)

Updated: Sep 3, 2022

The Vidai ceremony (or bidaai) is when the girl/new bride officially leaves the home.

Often times at big fat Indian weddings this is done on the hotel or venue premises since all the extended family is present. In modern Indian weddings in the west however, usually the girl and groom may already be living together, or will plan to move to a new city later, so it's not exactly literal these days but still a milestone tradition.

So what are the best Vidai Songs? In no particular order:

  1. Kabira (Reprise/Encore) - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

  2. Channa Merya - Ae Dil Mushkil

  3. Kehta Hai - Baabul

  4. Ye BetiyanTo Babul Ki - Na Tum Jaano Na Hum

  5. Heer - Jab Tak Hai Jaan

  6. Dilbaro - Raazi

  7. Madhaniyan - Neha Bhasin

  8. Ladki - Coke Studio

  9. Chal Le Chal - The Wedding Filmer

  10. Laadli - A R Rahman

  11. Khabi Alvida Naa Kehna - Khabi Alvida Naa Khena

  12. Meri Ladoo - Jatinder Singh

  13. Saajan Ke Ghar Jaana - Lajja

  14. Babul Ki Duayen Leti Ja - Neel Kamal

  15. Babul - Hum Aapke Hain Koun

  16. Mehloon Ka Raja Mila - Raja Ki Aaygi Baraat

Importance of Vidai Music

Once the ceremony is over at Indian weddings in America, usually the recessional takes place where the newlyweds makes an exit to music and fanfare. (We have songs for that too). They then return to take pics, then the Viday is done over by valet parking where the couple leaves for a bit to get ready for the reception.

It's sometimes more formality than actual Vidai (which happens a few days or weeks after the wedding when she actually moves out, but still requires music so here you go fam jam!

1. Kabira (Reprise/Encore) - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

My darling daughter is leaving for her in-law's house...

2. Channa Merya - Ae Dil Mushkil

Alright I'm leaving soon, please remember me in your prayers...

3. Kehta Hai - Baabul

A father says oh my daughter, you're the letters of my heart...

4. Ye Betiyan To Babul Ki - Na Tum Jaano Na Hum

A song about a father expressing his sentiments when the daughter is leaving (that's only when you really use Babul these days, in Bollywood jams)

5. Heer - Jab Tak Hai Jaan

I'm a queen now, some come and take me on a horse!

6. Dilbaro - Raazi

You taught me how to walk holding my finger...

This movie is about a daughter going into espionage in Pakistan via her marriage, but the song is still relevant for a bidaai!

7. Madhaniyan - Neha Bhasin

She then calls out to sad dad, saying she's about to a be stranger far away!

8. Laadki - Coke Studio

A sad folk song that is from the super famous Coke Studio, which always puts out folk hits.

9. Chal Le Chal - The Wedding Filmer

The Wedding Filmer and his team (good job Vishal) are a legend in the Indian wedding cinematography space and probably busy every weekend. They're not moving beyond just highlighting weddings but also into original content, which I JUST LOVE!

And this singer is just 15! Wow!

10. Laadli - A R Rahman

A song about women's empowerment, originally part of a digital campaign and now here to stay in the Bollywood ecosystem.

11. Khabi Alvida Naa Kehna - Khabi Alvida Naa Khena

Our two paths are converging my love...

12. Meri Ladoo - Jatinder Singh

You're my sweet desert...

Indian Wedding Sangeet Guide

13. Saajan Ke Ghar Jaana - Lajja

The hero has come home...

14. Babul Ki Duayen Leti Ja - Neel Kamal

Baby, take your father's blessings as you go...

15. Babul - Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Father, whatever you've taught me, whatever I've gained from you...I'm taking to my husband's house...

16. Mehlon Ka Raja Mila - Raja Ki Aaygi Baraat

Got my king...

Conclusion

Although the Vidai is not a massive ceremony, it's a very intimate and emotional experience for those who are involved and playing the right music for the people who matter at the right moment can make all the difference.

Play a track from this list and you should be good to go!
