And a massive part of Guju weddings, are well...of course...music, especially GARBA!
Oh Haalo!
Gujarati weddings are probably some of the most common weddings in places like Orange County, New Jersey, New York, Chicago and elsewhere. Most of the weddings I DJ or plan are at least consisting of a Shah, Patel or Mehta in the mix.
And if you want to know how to have an awesome Gujarati wedding, especially in a place like America or Canada, I got you covered with the tracks you need, and why.
So chalo...get to it!
Best Gujarati Wedding and Dance Songs in 2019
1. Chogada
This is the song that all the Guju aunties are doing performances to for their son/daughters Garba/Sangeet night.
2. Kamarriya
This song has a lot of pop culture in it going on, because:
Ultra modern garba type song
Check out the video for some of the latest dance moves
Features the floss, the shoot and other of the most modern dance moves
3. Dholida
Another song from the movie Loveyatri.Â
This is a remake of one of the most famous garba songs ever. As I said in this blog on Best Wedding Songs 2019, Indian music is currently all about balancing the old with the new, the trendy with the traditional! And music remakes are how it's done!
4. Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje. (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam)
This song is 20 years old, but will get even the grandmas up and out of their seats. The movie that got Aishwarya Rai on the world stage, well, after she already won Miss World!
5. Nagada Sang Dhol
This is the first major guju/garba song in a hindi movie since 1999, this was realeased in 2013 (nearly 16 years after HDDDS) is still a hit with all the "parents" (uncles/aunties) and young adults alike.
6. Udi Udi Jaye
Well, this is a garba-ish song, but it is talking about the Gujarati kite festival known as Uttarayan.
Did Somebody Say Sanedo?
Of course you can't have garba night without Sanedo...
This one is by Falguni Pathak (in my opinion) one of the best garba singers of our time...
This is when people form groups and circles, they sit down while the verse is going on, and when the chorus hits...they sing "sanedo sanedo blah blah sanedo", and all the people jump up and start dancing.
Random fact... originally it was called "Snehdo"
8. Bhai Bhai | Ram Leela
Another twist on Sanedo is this song...
This jam was made famous in the same movie as the song Nagada Sang Dhol...Ram Leela.
9. Kaka bapa na poriya
One of my favorites for gujarati line dancing is this. (For all my cocconuts)
Garba, Raas Garba, or whatever else you want to call it!
This is a video that shows the move:
And this is just a regular video of the whole song (little outdated but hey...it is what it is)
CONCLUSION
Gujarati weddings in America are all about making the Gujarati families of yesterday and tomorrow (who are second or third generation in America) celebrate their culture during your special occasions.
The easiest way to do that is with music, and the second easiest is with food (sample wedding menus).
Make sure you do both and I guarantee you that your Gujarati Wedding will be something to remember for a while, whether in Chicago or Surat!
